Guide 1

What are the Rivets?

Rivet is a short metal pin or bolt for holding together two plates of metal, its headless end being beaten out or pressed down when in place.

Guide 2

Parts Name/Material of the Blind Rivet

Mandrel: The mandrel is that portion of a pull mandrel or threaded type blind rivet that is presassembled in the rivet body. During rivet setting the pulling or torquing of the mandrel is the action which forms the blind head. Mandrels usually are upset and may be smooth, sererated, or threaded.

Pin. A pin is that part of a drive pin type blind rivet which is preassembled in the rivet body, and that when forced completely into the body spreads the walls of the rivet end forming a head on the blind side.

The material combinations of break mandrel blind rivets are designated as grades, with each material combination representing a different combination of rivet body material and mandrel material as given in IFI 114.

Rivet bodies and mandrels shall be made of the material specified for the grade in the IFI 114. When the specific material analysis is not given, the analysis shall be selected by the manufacturer and shall be such to assure that rivets meet the mechanical and performance requirements specified in the IFI 114.

Guide 3

Blind Rivet Surface Treatment

Grade 30 rivet bodies are either zinc or cadmium plated with a minimum plating thickness of 0.00015 in. Rivet bodies of all other grades are furnished plain (bare metal) unless otherwise specified. Because mandrels are discarded following rivet setting, mandrels of all materials may be furnished plain or with a protective coating at the option of the manufacturer.

Designation of the Blind Rivet

INCH FASTENERS

Rivets shall be designated by the following data in the sequence shown:
(a) product name
(b) head style
(c) rivet material/stem material
(e) rivet diameter/length
(f) protective finish, if required

See the following examples:

EXAMPLES:

METRIC FASTENERS

Rivets shall be designated by the following data in the sequence shown:
(a) product name
(b) head style
(c) rivet material/stem material
(e) rivet diameter/length
(f) protective finish, if required

See the following examples:

EXAMPLES:

Guide 5

Inspection of Blind Rivets

Vernier Caliper

Will use vernier calipers to measure the basic dimensions of Rivets.

Tension Testing Machine

Will use the tension testing machine to measure the tensile strength of metric/inch Rivets.

Coating Thickness Gauge

Will use coating thickness gauge to measuere the thickness of the coating layer, such as zinc electoplated.
